The Container Image Schema as the Conceptual Basis of English Adjectives’ Semantics

Аннотация

Статья посвящена когнитивной основе семантики английских прилагательных, обозначающих интеллектуальные и моральные характеристики человека. Сложность, связанная с исследованием этих прилагательных, состоит в том, что они обозначают абстрактные качества, которые не могут быть восприняты через зрение, слух или осязание. Возникает вопрос: каким образом абстрактные качества, выраженные через прилагательные, интерпретируются в английском языке? Настоящая работа представляет собой попытку ответить на этот вопрос. В основе исследования лежит идея двухуровневой семантики: семантика слова рассматривается как двухуровневое явление, включающее семантический (внешний) и концептуальный (глубинный) уровни. В настоящем исследовании впервые семантика прилагательных рассматривается с такой точки зрения. В работе представлен новый подход к выявлению когнитивной основы прилагательных: поскольку прилагательные произошли от старых синкретических объектов, а когнитивная модель слова формируется в момент создания слова, когнитивные модели, лежащие в основе семантики прилагательных, обнаруживаются посредством анализа их этимологии. Вклад авторов заключается в двух аспектах. Во-первых, авторы пришли к выводу, что образная схема «контейнер» управляет семантикой целого ряда прилагательных независимо от их морфемной структуры или происхождения. Как следует из примеров, абстрактные человеческие качества интерпретируются через следующие характеристики контейнера: границы, материал контейнера, размер, твердость/мягкость оболочки контейнера и др. Семантика аффиксальных или составных прилагательных обусловлена объединением концептов, выраженных аффиксом и корнем (одним или двумя). Во-вторых, результаты исследования показывают, что значение, придаваемое каждой характеристике контейнера, предопределяет оценку, выражаемую прилагательным. Характеристики контейнера обычно обладают амбивалентным значением, реализуя положительное или отрицательное значение благодаря взаимодействию с фреймом, в который включен "контейнер", вследствие чего одно и то же многозначное прилагательное может иметь как положительное, так и отрицательное значение. Выявление всего перечня когнитивных моделей, управляющих семантикой прилагательных в английском языке, может служить темой для дальнейших исследований.
